The representatives of The American Wu-Yin Yan-Jing® Federation consists of a number of martial artists through out the United States devoted to the spirit of peace, brotherhood, and tranquility. Many of us have more than 30 years experience in the martial arts and have recently renewed our commitment to one another and to the art of WYYJ through the formation of this federation. In order to maintain a professional and well organized federation, a Board of Directors was elected in June of 2006.
Ray A. Miles Sr. - Chairman of the Board
Grand Master Ray Miles Ray A. Miles Sr. studied Kun-tao Kung Fu with Alan Woodard in the early to mid-1970s. In November of 1974, Mr. Miles received his 1st degree black sash in Kun-tao. His interest in the martial arts was first inspired in the late 50's by his cousin by marriage the late Lum Lee of Toi Sun, Canton Province, China who explained and taught him many facets of Tai Chi Chuan Kung-Fu. Mr. Lee also taught him some of the toughening techniques for the hands, feet and other parts of the body in the Iron Hand system. This was the beginning of what proved to be a long and varied path to his position today. Although he developed a deep respect for the ancient Chinese art of Kung-Fu, (pronounced "Gung-Fu") Mr. Miles was curious about some of the other prominent forms of martial arts (Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, and Jiu Jitsu). As he began to develop relationships with some of the area martial arts experts, and applying knowledge aquired while serving in the U.S. Marines, he gained greater insight, deeper appreciation and true respect for these many diverse systems. He then applied this combined knowledge in the developement of his own very practical and effective style he called Wu-Yin Yan-Jing® or Deceptive Eye, by blending various systems together (Please see History section of this (website).
Through the development of this style, Master Miles inspired five generations of martial artists who are active today. Grand Master Miles now resides near Buchanan, Virginia just north of Roanoke with his wife Sally and is active in the American Wu-Yin Yan-Jing® Federation as chairman. Master John Furey John Furey began his martial arts training with Grand Master Miles in Olean, New York at the age of 11 in January of 1975. Practicing three hours per night, five nights per week, Mr. Furey studied both Kun-tao and Wu-Yin Yan-Jing® and received his first degree black sash and black belt respectively on July 6, 1976. Although very young at the time, Grand Master Miles expected that Mr. Furey meet all of the requirements of a black belt instructor. As such, he co-directed tournaments, promoted countless demonstrations, and at the age of 15 opened up his own martial arts school in Olean. Joe Backus, Duane Sherwood, Bob Boedecker, and Dave Martinelli were Mr. Furey's first black belts promoted. In 1980 Mr. Furey went away to college at Geneseo State University in Geneseo, New York where he co-founded the Geneseo Self Defense Club with friend and Tae Kwon Do expert Joe Antos. There, Mr. Furey met life-time friends and exceptional martial artists Robert Korody and George Reyngoudt. Upon graduation from college in December of 1983, Mr. Furey moved to Roanoke Virginia to continue his In June of 2006, Mr. Furey was nominated as the Chief Executive Officer of the American Wu-Yin Yan-Jing® Federation and was promoted to Black Belt 6th degree after 31 years of dedication to the federation Today, Mr. Furey lives in San Diego, California with his wife Ellen and three sons Brett, Brandon, and Ethan.
